[TOURS AROUND ROME]

the tiburtina (part one)

All the country around Rome is still crossed by the Consular streets, built by the Romans mostly in the Republican Age. On these streets, even after the fall of the Empire, towns kept on being built, to support commerce and help the pilgrims on their way to Rome. The Tiburtina was built originally to link Rome with Tibur (Tivoli), an ancient town conquered pretty early; during the centuries the street was extended through the inner regions of Central Italy, until Abruzzo and then the Adriatic sea. This tour starts of course in Tivoli, a town likely older than Rome: here it’s still possible to see the magnificent Villa of the Emperor Hadrian, built in the 2nd century AD, the most important example of Imperial Villa survived from the destructions of the Middle Age.
